CHURCH PLANTING IN MADISON, WI
A FAMILY ON MISSION
We have loved serving the church alongside one another for 15 years - 12 of those years as a married couple - and now get to bring our growing family along. God has given us a strong desire to grow and make disciples of Jesus who together would serve with selflessness and speak the good news of the gospel to those around them. That desire brought us to Madison three years ago and now leads us deeper into the city that we enjoy so much. We’re going to share the good news of Jesus with a people in need of the kind of transformation that only he can give them.
A HEART FOR OUR CITY
God has been steadily growing our heart for the near-east side of Madison - specifically the Marquette/Willy Street and SASY (Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara) neighborhoods and the culture that radiates out from them to the rest of the east side and beyond. This area is known for its eclectic community of artisans, independent small businesses and street festivals. The eastside is home to Madison’s oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods which house the progressive heart of a city known for being on the cutting edge of forward thinking when it comes to politics and human rights. With this area as our focus we hope to plant a healthy gospel-centered church that will be positioned to serve the community and help grow and make disciples of Jesus. We know this is going to be slow work that will require great faith in God to move and act for his glory and the good of the people we seek to reach. There is always the general hope that people everywhere would turn from living for themselves and live only for God, but when you can put names and faces and personalities to those people it is just different. O that we would be able to reach the people in our neighborhood with the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
There is an ever-increasing sense that the time is coming when the current paradigm of the church won’t make sense to unbelievers. This means that traditional church evangelism techniques and programs won't be as effective in reaching people for Jesus. We desire to emphasize that the church is not a building or a weekly event but a people who gather. In that gathering, we want to see the gifts of the whole body put to regular use. We also want to be a church where the pastors prioritize equipping the saints for the work of ministry and where we can all operate out of spiritual and physical rest in loving community. These desires combined with a growing understanding of our city caused us to rethink how we structure life together as a church.
Simply put, Eastside Church is a collective of neighborhood churches. The plan is to gather all together, as a collective, for worship on the first and third (and fifth) Sundays of each month and in homes, as neighborhood churches, on the second and fourth Sundays. Neighborhood churches will ideally be 12-20 people in size. Beyond Sunday mornings we aim to have discipleship groups of 3-4 people meeting weekly at a time and place that works best for those in the group. Organized by both geography and gender, discipleship groups will be the grindstone for life-on-life discipleship at Eastside Church. We think that the size of the discipleship groups will allow for intentional fellowship and deep accountability. WOULD YOU JOIN US?
We love being a family on mission and we are so excited about what God is going to do through Eastside Church. Similar to Paul in Philippians 4:10-20 we are learning the unique ways that God provides for those he calls into gospel ministry. Our hope is that you would also gain from partnership with us as we are on mission. In order to allow Eastside Church to plant in strength, and to give her time to grow, Nicky and I are raising up a team to support us by funding our salary for the first four years of the plant. Each year we will come off of our support incrementally so that by year five we would be, Lord willing, fully supported by the Eastside Church general fund. Would you please pray for us as we seek out partnerships? Would you also pray about partnering with us financially during the formative years of this church plant?
As we follow God into this new adventure we have been greatly strengthened by Joshua 1:9 where God says “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Our eyes are fixed on God and our hope is in him alone.
